Academia at Begbroke Science Park


Academic Research Departments active at Begbroke Science Park include the Departments of Materials, Engineering Science, Earth Sciences, Physics and Computer Science. Research groups work closely with each occupying adjacent space and sharing equipment and facilities. This makes for a vibrant atmosphere and helps foster the development of new ideas and co-operation. Whilst academic activity at Begbroke Science Park is mainly research based, academic CPD courses are also developed and delivered on site.


Professional Courses

A range of professional courses are developed and delivered by University of Oxford staff at Begbroke Science Park. The main focus is on Nanotechnology with CPD, Post Graduate courses and a summer school offered. The Director, Professor Pete Dobson is also heavily involved in enterprise and innovation teaching. Research Groups

Begbroke Science Park hosts over 20 different research groups from a range of departments in the Maths Physical and Life Science Division of Oxford University. The research groups typically occupy mixed departmental buildings resulting in the cross fertilisation of ideas and concepts. Research topics range from carbon nanotubes, archaeology and solar photovoltaics, through to electric power, robotics and impact engineering.

Academic Director

Professor Peter Dobson was appointed as academic director of Begbroke Science Park in August 2002 and has the responsibility of setting up new research institutes that combine University activities with company R&D, and leading a team that facilitates the rapid transfer of technology and knowledge. This has led to him being in demand internationally to advise on Knowledge Transfer. He is also currently the Strategic Advisor on Nanotechnology to the Research Councils in the UK.

Academic Facilities

Academic facilities are principally provided for the use of the academic community, but with some are also available to both on and off site commercial users. Facilities include the Department of Materials Characterisation Service, or "Begbroke Nano", and the Cleanroom.

Information for Schools

Begbroke Science Park has undertaken a number of projects in partnership with local schools; providing material for teachers, and giving access to equipment that would normally be well beyond the scope of a school to provide.
