Professional Courses

A range of professional courses are developed and delivered by University of Oxford staff at Begbroke Science Park. The main focus is on Nanotechnology in conjunction with Oxford University's Department for Continuing Professional Development. Post Graduate courses and a Summer School are offered. The Director, Professor Pete Dobson is also heavily involved in enterprise and innovation teaching. See also the online "basics" courses in Climate and Nanotechnology.

Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine

Small companies and multi-nationals alike are beginning to make innovative uses of the behaviours that arise from nano-scale materials. To capitalise on these beginnings it is vital that we create opportunities for professional development in the science and characterisation techniques that help us to understand the novel behaviour of nano-scale processes and structures. With so many world-class researchers working in this field at Oxford University, Begbroke Science Park is uniquely placed to answer this need and we have collaborated with the University's Department of Continuing Education to develop accredited professional courses in nanotechnology.

Postgraduate Certificate in Nanotechnology

Our online part-time Postgraduate Certificate in Nanotechnology comprises three modules which can also be studied independently:

Nanotechnology Summer School

Our annual Nanotechnology Summer School offers a selection of short courses on new developments in nanotechnologies and nanomedicine, delivered by world-renowned experts. Delegates have the opportunity to gain an understanding of recent advances in, impacts of and challenges for nanotechnologies. Topics in previous years have included:

  • Nanotechnology for Energy and Carbon Management
  • New Developments in Bionanotechnology
  • Nanomedicine
  • Safety of Manufactured Nanoparticles

The theme of the fourth annual Nanotechnology Summer School in 2012 will be 'Introduction to Bionanotechnology'.

This five-day intensive course provides an introduction to the exciting and emerging field of bionanotechnology. Each of the five days of the Nanotechnology Summer School has a dedicated theme and delegates can enrol for one day, more than one day or for the whole week - discounts are offered for those enrolling for all five days.

The first day of the summer school gives an introduction to cell biology and bionanotechnology. The following four days focus on bioanalytical techniques; applied genomics and proteomics; nanoparticles, nanostructures and biomimetics; and the interaction of nanoparticles with biological systems, respectively. We also offer practical courses in the characterisation of nanoparticles in collaboration with BegbrokeNano, the Oxford Materials Characterisation Service.

Energy and Environmental Conservation

The Continuing Professional Development Centre also offers professional courses in a variety of other subjects, such as Energy (and here) and Environmental Conservation.
