Grobert Goes Back to the Future

Swapping the eccentric actor Christopher Lloyd for the even more eccentric TV presenter Peter Snow requires no stretch of the imagination…but hold on, who’s been transported in (sorry!) to play his sidekick? None other than Begbroke-based Nanomaterials by Design Research Group leader Professor Nicole Grobert! Prof Nicole Grobert has been interviewed on Newsnight for an item on “Back to the Future” whilst whizzing around a race track in a DeLorean driven by Peter Snow. The interview broadcast on 20 Oct 2015 is currently on iPlayer and Nicole features after 39 minutes.

No stranger to trailblazing, Nicole was selected  as one of two ‘Future Leaders’ representing Europe at the Science and Technology in Society Forum as far back as October 2008.  Cooperating with the STS forum, the New York Academy of Sciences invited more than 30 leading research institutions from around the world to submit their nomination. A group of eight exceptional young scientists representing Asia, North America, Europe and Africa, were selected to be invited to the 2008 STS forum meeting in Kyoto.

Professor Grobert is still going places, with or without Peter Snow as her her taxi driver – she’s just been elected Chair of the Young Academy of Europe . The YAE is an international, non-governmental association of individual scientists and scholars who are experts and leaders in their respective fields, as recognized by their peers. The YAE 2016 AGM will be held at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, on 19/20 September 2016.

Nicole summed up her experience –  “Being interviewed in a DeLorean was surreal, scary and exciting. Almost crashing into a barrier added another boost of adrenalin. It was a lot of fun, but for now I’ll continue working on the future of materials.”
