OPV and Energenics share secrets to successful International Business
International Breakfast Seminar
The latest seminar in the BSP International Business Breakfast Seminar Series saw BSP tenants share their experiences of trading internationally. Oxford PV and Energenics, both University of Oxford spinouts, recalled how they’ve navigated international markets, the challenges and benefits along the way and the lessons they’ve learnt.
Brain McAllister, Business Development Director at Oxford PV, kicked off the seminar by divulging some dos and don’ts of doing business overseas, many of which he’s had to learn the hard way. With over 20 years’ experience developing business relationships in countries from Korea to the USA, Brian was well placed to advise delegates on the potential faux pas they may face and highlighted the importance of building strong business relationships from the outset.
Stuart Anderson, Energenics Director and Mike Attfield, Energenics CEO, led delegates through their company’s experiences of penetrating international markets, setting up supply chains, managing significant changes in the scale of production and the challenges that accompany both up and downsizing.
Mike also spoke of the challenges trading internationally can bring whilst being a relatively small player in much larger markets. He went on to mention the importance of creating stability within volatile markets and working within a company’s limits, even when presented with enticing opportunities.
Closing the seminar, he emphasised the challenges of penetrating foreign markets, and how embracing failure allows an organisation to be more successful next time round.
