When Science Meets Sport: Oxford PV crowned 2015 champions at Begbroke Science Park’s annual Sports Day
10 July 2015. As anyone who’s ever taken part in the Parents’ Race at the School Sports Day will tell you, adults competing in children’s sporting games is a serious business! And so it was in the 2015 Sports Day at Begbroke Science Park.
The competition took place in the Park’s walled garden against a background of warm Cotswold Stone – the idyllic setting enhanced by strong July sunshine, a sizzling BBQ and event artist Merlin Porter sketching quietly to capture the essence of the occasion.
Eight teams drawn from the research and commercial tenants on site competed in a variety of races including bean bag throwing, an obstacle race and a water relay, culminating in a fiercely contested tug of war finale.
Somewhat unsurprisingly for a team named Half Ton Too, Oxford PV saw off defending champions APEM and emerged victorious in the Tug of War. The perovskite pioneers were also crowned 2015 overall champions despite a strong challenge from the Nanomaterials by Design team headed by Dr Shayan Meysami. All the competitors were cheered on by a noisy crowd of onlookers , enjoying the spectacle and hot dogs in equal measure.
Dr Caroline Livingstone, General Manager, Begbroke Science Park said “Our annual sports Day has rapidly established itself as a highlight of the Begbroke calendar. It’s a great way for the whole site to come together and mix – our gardens provide the perfect backdrop for some fun and games, and I’m always surprised by how much everyone really wants to win!”
