Energenics is one of the Science Park’s oldest tenants, having been at Begbroke since the company’s inception. The present business grew out of a nanotechnology spin-out from Oxford University (Oxonica) led by Professor Peter Dobson in 1999, becoming privately owned in 2009 to focus on the discovery and commercialisation of novel speciality chemical additives and treatments based on cerium oxide nanoparticles.
The first commercial product, Envirox™, is now a well-established diesel fuel additive which improves fuel efficiency (thereby lowering CO2 emissions), assists the regeneration of Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs), cleans engines/exhaust systems, and reduces harmful particulate emissions. It has been used by major transport company fleets and formulated into aftermarket fuel treatments of leading international brands for cars and vans.
As the company has diversified into a niche chemical business, they have developed and commercialised:
- CerPlus®, a range of novel UV absorber additives and wood treatments which extend the lifetime of coatings and the original appearance of wood substrates.
- Envirox™ CatCoat, a range of water based catalytic coating formulations for automotive exhaust catalysts and particle filters.
Product development has benefited from the close working relationship with the Oxford Materials Characterisation Service based on the Begbroke site, supported by the Begbroke Innovation Voucher scheme – which helps local SMEs access expertise and facilities at the University of Oxford. Recent analysis of wood treated with CerPlus® has helped to provide evidence and understanding of its effectiveness as a timber treatment and its longevity under UK weather conditions.
Energenics continues to research and develop new products from the Begbroke site: “Being located at Oxford University Science Park adds visible credentials of a proper scientific foundation to our products through the international recognition and credibility of the University’s reputation – particularly to overseas customers” – Mike Attfield, Chief Executive Officer.
