Adaptix was founded to “Transforming Radiology” through offering low-dose, low-cost 3D imaging at the Point of Care to replace today’s fixed 2D systems and disrupt a $12bn market. It achieves this through patented proprietary technology, specifically a Flat Panel X-ray Source (FPS) with a multitude of individually addressable emitters with an integrated power supply (known as a ‘monoblock’). Essentially, we are ‘digitizing’ the source to complete the digitization of the imaging system and allow fast 3D imaging with no moving parts. The next steps are to exploit the 3D images using algorithmic and Machine Learning image processing approaches to deliver enhanced diagnostic insight to clinicians.

Adaptix started operating in 2014 on the Harwell campus and soon took accommodation at Begbroke to support its growth to what is now over 50 people, including over 12 PhD’s. The company has raised over £20m in equity, loans and grants which have allowed it to bring to market a unique offer for the veterinary market and develop its novel technology for medical imaging, with its first product, a ‘desktop’ sized orthopaedic imaging system, now launched. Further products will soon follow for dental and chest imaging. In addition, the technology has relevance to Non Destructive Evaluation (’NDE’) of composites and electronics, and the company intends to spin this business out.

Adaptix has always had science at its core and worked with the National Physical Laboratory, the Science and Technology Facilities Council, and the Universities of Liverpool, Edinburgh, Manchester and (of course) Oxford. The company has also focussed on maturing as an organisation and business, achieving ISO 13485 (the medical standard), reporting under International Financial Reporting Standards, and filing over 180 patents across 23 patent families.

Being based at Begbroke Science Park has been invaluable for the development of Adaptix, allowing an opportunity to scale-up facilities and benefit from the services offered by the CIE including facilities management, a fully staffed reception and goods in, a shuttle bus service to Oxford and the on-site cafe & restaurant, allowing management to focus on R&D and commercialization.

With senior leadership drawn from global leaders in the medical imaging industry, such as GE Healthcare and Siemens, the company is well placed to commercialise its technology and realise its ambition of having its products touch the lives of everyone that you know. The company recently won a grant to work on the use of quantum technologies, which will lead to the next transformation in radiology, a future of colour imaging and more exciting developments from the Adaptix team.
